Who You Are Matters
Hi! I'm Emily and I'm from Los Angeles. I'd lived in LA my entire life up until my freshman year of college, when I moved to New York City to attend school at Barnard.
I transferred to USC as a sophomore. Although Barnard was not the best fit for me, I absolutely loved living in New York and I intend to move back after college. Ideally, I would like to work for a publication of some kind doing photo or print journalism. In the meantime, I am very caught up in my Journalism coursework at USC.
Both of my parents are highly creative in their own distinct ways. People often tell me that I have inherited the "creative genes" from them, which I would like to believe is true. My mom and dad are both outgoing and social, and I would say I am more reserved and soft spoken by first impression. I did not inherit the "extrovert genes".
From a young age, I've always had overwhelmingly high expectations for myself. My parents often remind me to stop being so hard on myself.
About two years ago, I started listening to Jay Shetty's podcast called, "On Purpose." Since then, he has become a huge role model to me. I am so inspired by his philosophies and attitudes towards life. His way of seeing the world is so refreshing and different from anyone I've ever met. He recently published his first book, "Think Like A Monk," which I am in the middle of reading.
I've always felt a special connection to swans. They are so elegant and graceful. I want to carry myself in the world with the same poise of a swan.
At my old house, we had a lot of acorn trees which dropped nuts all over our backyard. I collected these acorns in plastic bags, and one day I potted one of the seeds. I cared for this tree like it was my child. I watered the seed religiously each day, checking in on it's growth every morning. About two months later, when it had grown to be a very mini tree, a gardener threw out my tree by accident. I was devastated and I have not grown any plants on my own since then.

I have a lot of respect for creative people; I don't consider myself to have much creativity so I think it's awesome you grew up in a family with that creative energy. I'm sure it was a fun house. We have a similar tendency in being too hard on ourselves and it's a very tough habit to break! I haven't made much of an effort to break that pattern for myself but it sounds like Jay Shetty has had a big impact on the way you think about life so big props to you for that.
ReplyDeleteHi Emily! It looks like we have pretty similar long term career goals which is exciting to hear! I haven't met a lot of other people that want to pursue that kind of career path so I'm happy to have found someone else who's passionate about it. Hope we cross paths again in New York one day! :)
ReplyDeleteHi Emily, great blog. Your story about having a short lived botany career was especially interesting. That's such a bummer to have lost that oak. If you ever want to get back into growing plants I recommend starting with sweet basil. Homemade pesto pasta is tough to beat.
ReplyDeleteEmily, I don't know who made this comment, but I can't help but comment on a New York/ Basil/ Pesto connection that I have: as I may have mentioned, I lived in New York for a number of years. It's where my wife's family are from.
DeleteOne time her dad, who was a great amateur chef and all around foodie, took us to a restaurant in Greenwich Village, near where we lived, and not only did we sit outside in the middle of massive gardens, but we all had pesto pasta. We watched the server pick a bunch of basil that was growing nearby, and then he made the pesto tableside in the old school way, with a mortar and pestle. One of the most memorable meals I've ever had.
Hi Emily, very interesting read. I relate because I also transferred from a school back on the east coast. I also grew up there while you grew up in LA, but I live on the west coast now permanently. I'm glad you have found USC to be a better fit than Barnard, I know I have found it a better fit than my previous school. I've also heard Journalism is awesome, especially at USC. My sister is studying it here as well. Maybe you will work together doing photo journalism some day.
