Random blog post #2

I spent most of last week in New York City, visiting old friends of mine from my first year of college at Barnard.  Upon returning to LA, I've been thinking about where I would ideally like to live after college. I've been obsessively comparing the two cities and thinking about what they each have to offer. I am from LA and so I naturally have a bias. I think of Manhattan as being harsh, dark, and somewhat bleak (in the winter months, at least).  And yet, despite all of the negative adjectives I may use to describe my perception of the city, I feel compelled to go back there. Manhattan has cast a certain spell over me (which I can't quite understand logically), but it is to the extent that I am considering living there after college.  I lived on the Upper West Side during my freshman year of college. It was my first experience being away from home and in hindsight, I'm happy I did it. But while I was there, I was fixated on the pain and darkness of winter. I felt so con...

World We Imagine pt. 1

The Blue Sweater is an interesting story of how a woman with a will to change the world was given the chance to see, firsthand, the areas that needed her help. Novogratz's story is unique in that, most Americans will never travel to the third world countries where Novogratz lived. She had a hands-on reckoning with extreme poverty in these devastated parts of the world, but most people will only ever understand these issues from afar.  Knowing this, I think the next best option to increase awareness is to improve the way that we educate people at a distance. Throughout my time in school, I've found that when an issue is presented in a visual format, I feel significantly more connected to that problem. I find that information is so much more digestible and meaningful when it's presented in photo or video format. There is a real power in good storytelling and I think my role in making the world a better place has something to do with that. I am really interested in photojourna...

Book 2: Post 1

For our second book of the semester, I chose "What We Don't Talk About When We Talk About Fat" by Aubrey Gordon.  People have so many misconceptions when they think about obesity. There are so many factors that can influence a person's weight, and we often fail to examine the correlation between socioeconomics and health.  Being overweight is so stigmatized and looked down upon, and it's evident in the way that our society treats people who are heavier. From what I understand about the book, Gordon highlights these inequities and the way that a person's physical appearance dictates their success in our culture.  My copy of the book is arriving at the end of this week, but I'm excited to begin reading and to learn more about this issue. I hope that I'll finish the book with a better understanding of what I, personally, can do to  promote justice and encourage change.
