World We Imagine pt. 3
Compass: Transforming the World Through Stories
Compass is a news organization which aims to synthesize various global events into short videos geared towards younger audiences. At Compass, we assign skilled journalists and filmmakers to cover current events through an adolescent-friendly lens.
Opportunity
At Compass, we believe that exposure is a key element in creating a more peaceful world. The fate of our future lies within the hands of our children. Our organization is devoted to educating America’s youth and increasing awareness on global events. By doing so, we hope to inspire children to investigate these issues throughout their adult lives, and to hopefully discover their own role in making the world a better place.
The educational field is a huge market with a lot of room for disruption. Similarly, there is a lot of space for innovation in newsroom settings. I believe that Compass is entering a blue ocean which is untouched by competition.
Solution
The name itself, “Compass”, underscores the organizations primary mission: helping younger audiences to navigate various global happenings through a format that is digestible and informative. At Compass, journalists and filmmakers endure a six-week training course where they learn about company standards and objectives. During this period, employees have a chance to practice the skill of storytelling for younger viewers. Upon completing this course, filmmakers and journalists at Compass collaborate to produce twenty-minute videos on designated world topics. By creating condensed, mini-documentaries, we aim to accommodate the adolescent attention span. Furthermore, by presenting current events in a visual format, we believe that we can appeal to a larger percentage of this generation. According to a recent study on classrooms in America, “93% of institutions indicate that video-use increases student satisfaction levels in relation to their education and learning experience. It also increases achievement for students, according to 85% of institutions” (Boclips, 2020).
Existing Companies in This Space
TIME for Kids and DOGO News are some of the few existing companies in this space. Both publications are focused on producing news articles for kids. However, to my knowledge, I do not know of any digital media news organizations for young audiences. I believe Compass is unique in creating news videos for young people.
Looking Ahead
Compass is currently centralized within the United States. With an investment of $1.2 million dollars from AMDP, Compass will be able to expand its reach, providing news for children in other areas of the world. Given this investment, we expect to reach the global market by 2025.
